James Page Endurance Athlete Biography
James Page, a retired police officer with a 30-year tenure at the Metropolitan Police and Avon and Somerset Constabulary, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by becoming the first person in the UK to complete a Continuous Deca Iron Triathlon on UK soil. This gruelling event involved a 24-mile swim, a 1120-mile bike ride, and a 262-mile run completed within 10 ½ days, marking James as one of fewer than 300 people globally to accomplish this feat.
A Life of Service and Struggle
James Page’s journey began at 19 when he joined the police force in South London. Throughout his career, he faced numerous traumatic incidents that tested his resilience. Despite these challenges, his personal life was even more tumultuous. In his early 20s, James suffered from years of physical and psychological abuse, leading to severe depression and thoughts of suicide. An incident at work further exacerbated his struggles, causing him to spiral into unhealthy habits, reaching nearly 18 stone in weight.
The birth of his second daughter in 2001, who was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder Peters Plus Syndrome, became a turning point. Her fight for life inspired James to make significant changes, leaving an abusive marriage and embarking on a journey of self-improvement through sport.
Transformation Through Sport

James initially turned to rowing and gradually adopted a healthier lifestyle, quitting smoking, drinking, and addressing his relationship with food. In 2006, he discovered triathlons, starting with sprints and progressing to marathons and Ironman competitions. His dedication to sport became a lifeline, helping him cope with life’s adversities, including the loss of his mother, a friend’s suicide, and his wife’s battle with cancer.
Unprecedented Achievements
James’s commitment to pushing his limits led him to accomplish remarkable feats:
- 2013: Completed a Double Iron Triathlon, including a 4.8-mile swim, 232-mile bike ride, and a double marathon, summiting Snowdon.
- 2015: Finished a Triple Iron Triathlon, comprising a 7.2-mile swim, 348-mile bike ride, and a triple marathon, placing second.
- 2019: Became the first person to complete a Continuous Deca Iron Triathlon, involving a 24-mile swim, 1120-mile bike ride, and a 262-mile run in just 10 ½ days on UK soil.
Only 300 people globally have completed a Continuous Deca Iron Triathlon.
Inspiring the Next Generation
James’s journey has profoundly impacted his family. He inspired his children to undertake their own physical challenges, including an 1800-mile bike ride and an ultra-marathon through the UK’s largest mountains. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the support of a loving family.
Continued Pursuits and Future Goals
Despite a recent breakdown, James continues to pursue ultra-endurance cycling, completing events like the Southern Divide gravel race and the Trans Pyrenees, a gruelling 1200-mile race with over 42,000 meters of climbing. He is now preparing for a 1000-mile race from Scotland to the Southwest in August 2024.
